Publication Ethics
Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement
Digital Muslim Review is a peer-reviewed journal, published twice a year online, committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics. This statement clarifies the ethical behaviour expected of all parties involved in the publication process: the author(s), the editors, the peer reviewers, and the publisher UIN Banten Press which is part of Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten State Islamic University. We base our policies on the best practices and guidelines provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) , the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) , and the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing as promoted by COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME.
1. Publication Decisions
The Editor-in-Chief of Digital Muslim Review is responsible for deciding which of the submitted articles should be published. This decision is based on the validation of the work, its originality, its contribution to the field of digital Muslim studies, and its importance to researchers and readers. The Editor is guided by the journal's editorial policy and legal requirements regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The Editor may confer with other editors or reviewers in making this decision. Editorial decisions are not influenced by the journal's revenue sources.
2. Fair Play and Non-Discrimination
Editors evaluate manuscripts based on their intellectual content and academic merit without regard to the authors' race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.
3. Confidentiality
The Editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, potential reviewers, and the publisher, as appropriate. Reviewer comments are also treated as confidential.
4. Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest (Editors)
Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor's own research without the express written consent of the author. Editors must recuse themselves from handling manuscripts if they have a conflict of interest (competitive, collaborative, or other relationships/connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers).
5. Duties of Reviewers
• Contribution to Editorial Decisions: Peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and, through editorial communication with the author, may also assist the author in improving the manuscript.
• Promptness and Qualification: Any selected referee who feels unqualified to review the research or knows that a prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and decline to participate in the review process.
• Confidentiality: Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.
• Standards of Objectivity: Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Referees should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.
• Acknowledgement of Sources: Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. They should also call to the editor's attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
• Disclosure and Conflict of Interest: Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage.
6. Duties of Authors
• Reporting Standards: Authors should present an accurate account of their original research as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.
• Originality, Plagiarism, and Acknowledgment: Authors must ensure that they have written entirely original works. If the authors have used the work and/or words of others, this must be appropriately cited or quoted. Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given.
• Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication: An author should not submit manuscripts describing essentially the same research to more than one journal or primary publication concurrently. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.
• Authorship Criteria: Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included, and that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.
• Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest (Authors): All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.
• Fundamental Errors in Published Works: When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper in the form of a corrigendum or retraction, following COPE guidelines.
7. Publisher's Responsibilities
UIN Banten Press (Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten), as the publisher of Digital Muslim Review, is committed to its guardianship over all stages of publishing. We recognize our ethical and other responsibilities and are committed to ensuring that advertising, reprint, or other commercial revenue has no impact or influence on editorial decisions. The publisher will assist in communications with other journals and/or publishers where this is useful and necessary, and will work with editors to handle allegations of research misconduct.
8. Handling of Allegations of Research Misconduct
Digital Muslim Review takes all allegations of potential misconduct (plagiarism, citation manipulation, data falsification/fabrication, etc.) seriously. In the event that an allegation is made, the editor will follow the procedures and flowcharts set out by COPE to investigate the claim. If an ethical violation is confirmed, the journal will take appropriate action, which may include issuing a correction, retraction, or expression of concern.
9. Complaints and Appeals
The journal has a clear procedure for handling complaints and appeals against editorial decisions. Complaints should be directed to the Editor-in-Chief, who will acknowledge receipt and follow COPE guidelines to ensure a fair and thorough investigation.
